Student Managed Investment Fund

Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship Student Managed Investment Fund

The Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) provides students with an opportunity to learn and apply their investment knowledge. The SMIF focuses primarily on equity investments in the context of a diversified portfolio. It is a long-only fund (i.e., no short-selling).

Consistent with the vision of the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship (Best for our WorldTM), students managing the fund incorporate ESG (Environment, Social, and Governance) rakings as one of the factors in the investment process. The student management team relies on ESG rankings and scores from reputable financial information providers, such as Morningstar and Standard & Poor’s.

Students are responsible for conducting valuations of companies and presenting their recommendations to the Board of Advisers during two trading sessions each semester. These equity valuations are grounded in company fundamentals and employ well-established techniques such as valuation by comparables, dividend discount models, and discount cash flow models. Additionally, students learn to analyze and interpret financial statements as part of their process for evaluating companies.

Connecting Students with Investment Education

The SMIF’s main objective is to educate members on investing through a comprehensive approach, including:

  • Investing responsibly in financial securities.
  • Managing a portfolio and screening for securities based on valuation, fundamentals and other criteria such as ESG rankings.
  • Best practices in investments.
  • How to be ethically responsible managers as they gain success and/or power in their careers.
  • Providing seminars on and off campus.

How the Student Managed Investment Fund Works

Student members attend regular fund meetings on Wednesdays at noon in the conference room of the Jerry Taylor and Nancy Bryant Trading Floor. Active involvement requires students to stay current on the stock market and economic news by regularly reading financial news sources such as The Wall Street Journal (available for free online at the Alvin Sherman Library), CNBC, and other sources, which enables quality discussions during meetings. Both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to participate.

While SMIF is an extracurricular activity that is not directly tied to a specific course, it is highly recommended that non-finance students interested in participating in the fund consider taking FIN 2020, an introduction to stock market investing.

Stocks purchased by the fund require approval by the Board of Advisers, which is obtained by presenting the investment idea during a board meeting and demonstrating that the proposed stock fits the fund's objectives. These presentations are prepared by and delivered by student members under the guidance and assistance of Professor Figueiredo, SMIF faculty adviser.

Those interested in getting involved with SMIF or learning about upcoming events should contact Professor Figueiredo at afigueired@nova.edu.
